Capcom released Resident Evil 3 earlier this month, but modders have been hard at work since the demo dropped in late March. Modders have been creating content from swapping out protagonist Jill Valentine with characters from Resident Evil 2 or even Animal Crossing, to creating new outfits for the S.T.A.R.S. member.

Other modders are focused on creating visual improvements on the new remake title. It’s no secret that Capcom developed Resident Evil 2 and 3 at the same time, even though RE3 was released one year later. This meant a lot of cut content and other changes from the original.

Resident Evil 3 does not include ray-tracing, a rendering technique used in gaming to create impressive lighting effects that are more realistic. Raccoon City is impressive in the remake, but modder Pascal Gilcher decided to further improve upon the existing graphics.

Unfortunately, the mod isn’t public yet. The only way to download Gilcher’s mods is by donating on Patreon, but it gives players access to all of their currently released content.

Another modder, AD Massicuro, built upon Gilcher’s mod with some additional effects. “I used RTGI that makes a very lights source and relative shadows more real, but also adding many more Filmic effects, and better Reflections using also SSR and the “RT Shaders” from Pascal Glitcher.”

In a preview video, the modder shows how they created a more credible Ray Tracing effect to create global illumination. Using this method, both direct and indirect lights are affected.

With “Ambient Occlusion,” the shadows were enhanced for all characters and objects. The shadows especially make the lurking walkers even more creepy. Some Color Grading was also added to enhance the natural colors.

AD Massicuro also brought the same terrifying effects to Resident Evil 2 last year.

Unfortunately, there’s no information on when AD Massicuro plans to release its lighting mod to the world. For now, players can enjoy the impressive comparison video showing just how horrifying, yet beautiful, a place Raccoon City can be.

Resident Evil 2 was released in 2019 and is currently out now.
