When you think of the installments in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil 7 is definitely one that stands out. It’s much different than games that came before it. For starters, it features an immersive first-person perspective. That gained a lot of attention right out of the gate.
It instantly gives the game a different feel from what fans have come to expect. The story-telling also was a bit different compared to previous installments. It centers around a family, who have been infected by some sort of fungal virus.
The game’s main protagonist, Ethan Winters, sets out on a journey to find his long-lost wife, Mia. Presumed dead, Ethan believes there’s more to the story and he’ll do everything he can to rescue her from the depths of hell that she know finds herself surrounded by.
Even though this game launched with mixed results, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has gone on to achieve great commercial success over the years. In fact, Capcom just released some sales figures for the game. As of December 2019, this installment has done $7 million in sales. That’s an incredible milestone for Capcom. As of now, it’s the third best-selling game in the franchise.
It’s not surprising to see this game eventually have as much commercial success as it has now. Capcom did an amazing job at changing up the formula, making this game more about a creepy narrative that sucks you in right from the beginning. As Ethan, you’re always on the edge of your seat.
As you walk around the seemingly abandoned house that Mia is presumably trapped in, you’re always thinking about one of the family members jumping out from behind a corner. Sometimes, they do. That’s when you’ll have to be quick on the trigger in hopes of surviving.
Each one of the family members has a pretty detailed backstory that you’ll have the pleasure of learning more about. The aforementioned mansion that you’ll be exploring also seems like a maze of puzzles. There is a lot of history you’re not privy to, but you’re willing to go through every nook and cranny to find your beloved Mia. The game even has a choice system that affects how the main story plays out. That’s huge for these types of survival-horror experiences.
Now that Capcom has sales figures to justify their change in direction with the Resident Evil series, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them take more risks moving forward. We shall see.
