Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has received lots of teasers and trailers over the last few months, but the most recent, “Cal’s Mission”, is the first that gives fans of the franchise a proper look at the characters, different worlds and even hints at some Zelda-like puzzle levels.
It appears the game is very stereotypically Star Wars, like the devs over at Respawn were told by EA to keep it as closely related to the movies as possible. This game is seemingly set in between the storyline of Revenge of the Sith and New Hope, although the specifics aren’t yet known as to how Jedi: Fallen Order will fit into Star Wars canon.
First off, the trailer gives fans a fresh look at the Ninth Sister and the Inquisitors. These characters were featured heavily in the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Cal himself looks a little odd. It’s not easy to put my finger on why he doesn’t ‘fit’ as the main character, but there is something off about his facial animation and character design. Cal’s crew is made up of a ragtag bunch of space weirdos, like in any Star Wars production.
What looks awesome from the trailer is the huge-scale Boss Battles, the first glimpse fans have had since it was teased that Respawn’s devs were comparing some of the game’s mechanics to Dark Souls. You face off against this giant bird-alien creature and duel it out in (hopefully) slick lightsaber duels.
The trailer also shows off some of the multiple new environments and planets to explore. You’ll be able to jump from planet to planet with each environment posited as a sort of semi-open world area to explore. It’s likely the puzzle hinted at in this trailer – which looks very Zelda-like – will be part of self-exploration around these different areas.
Many fans have been keen to compare Star Wars: Fallen Order with Uncharted. This is mostly because of the pretty lacklustre E3 gameplay trailer, which featured a lot of climbing over rocks and linear combat sections.
In contrast, this new trailer highlights that the game won’t be linear for the vast majority of the story. Players will be left to their own devices to explore and battle their way across different levels.
Fans will wait to see whether the game lives up the hype, Jedi: Fallen Order releases on November 15th.
