This past May, longtime fans of the Call of Duty franchise were pleased to learn that Infinity Ward decided to return to what’s arguably their most popular series, Modern Warfare. But, instead of making a sequel, the developers decided to do a soft reboot, which is also probably going to be the case with next year’s CoD title, which is rumored to be a reboot of the Black Ops series.

During a recent interview with Game Informer, Jacob Minkoff, who is Infinity Ward’s campaign gameplay director, explained why the studio decided to go forward with the Modern Warfare reboot instead of creating a fourth installment of the series.

In Minkoff’s opinion, the history and lore of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare trilogy doesn’t resemble anything about the world we live in today. To sum it up, he just felt that the original series isn’t relatable anymore.

“There’s so much lore in the original trilogy,” said Minkoff during his chat with Game Informer. “The stakes of the world bare no resemblance to the world that we live in today, that we just felt it wasn’t relatable anymore.”

He also said another factor that went into the decision was the fact that there’s a good amount of the Call of Duty fanbase that has never played the original Modern Warfare trilogy, which spanned from 2007 to 2011, so in his opinion, it’s not realistic to expect those fans to go back and get caught up.

While the developers haven’t been shy about revealing more of the multiplayer gameplay in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they haven’t shown much of the single-player campaign. Of course, they have revealed a few details regarding the tone and some of the events that unfold during the game’s opening mission, but aside from the original reveal trailer, we haven’t seen anything regarding MW’s campaign.

It was recently revealed that the game will feature a playable child soldier, but the developers have promised that it’ll be handled tastefully.

Child soldiers being features in a game is hardly anything new, as it’s been done in other games, most recently in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. However, they weren’t playable characters in MGSV, which won’t be the case in the Modern Warfare reboot.
