One of the most popular movie franchises of all time has to be The Avengers. These movies smash it at the box offices and feature one of the most iconic superhero groups. Who hasn’t wanted to play with these characters in a video game? Marvel’s Avengers is giving fans the chance to do just that, thankfully.
We know this game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. Aside from that, fans have been in the dark. That is until Square Enix officially announced the game at their E3 press conference today. Alas, we have some concrete details to really sink our teeth into.
Let’s start off by saying the game officially releases on May 15, 2020. That’s just under a year that fans have to wait. It will be available on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. The game can be played solo or co-op. The latter seems to be a huge selling point given that the Avengers always work together in the comics and movies. You’ll want to team up with your friends to take down whatever big-bads this game features.
As far as playable characters, the Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Widow have all been confirmed. More heroes will be available after launch, thankfully. This is incredible news. So many times do companies try putting in costly DLC packs to make extra money. It looks like Square Enix is just focused on giving gamers the best superhero experience that they can.
The trailer that was shown at this press conference highlights an in-depth and immersive story. It appears the developers want players to get sucked into the story as if they’re living it in real-time. On paper, this is a brilliant idea. It should add weight to the already interesting campaign.
As far as the plot, the Avengers suffer a devastating accident at an event called A-Day. The media and society turn against them, causing them to break up. They must later rejoin forces if they hope to save earth from the perils of new and familiar evils.
It’s great to see the developers going in a different direction compared to the movies. Not that these movies are bad, but this video game deserves a distinct story of its own. We also know that players will have plenty of ways to customize their superheroes, making them better in many ways.
Already, Marvel’s Avengers seems like a winner. Now if only we could see some actual gameplay footage.
