Bungie has dropped a huge barioth on Destiny 2‘s expansion The Edge of Fate, and reactions have tilted somewhere between ambivalent and downright disapproving about it… Apparently, you can practically turn into a ball of dark matter and cruise around the new Kepler destination. Yes, a ball. The announcement tweet from this very morning has caused an uproar, with opinions being split between confusion to annoyance and, bafflingly, some being downright excited??

With the set release date of 15 July 2025, The Edge of Fate retains Bungie’s trademark flair for cinematic trailers and lore-heavy expansions; however, the newly added mechanic has poured some real confusion into the gravy. Like why a ball? Why not a new subclass? Or literally anything else? The replies to that tweet are a veritable goldmine of skepticism, memes, and downright frustration.

One player under the handle @proxjidious provided an excellent caption for the mood with “Im really not trying to be a ball in Destiny.” Same, Jeffery. Same. Others like @areskshi71378 are holding out for a Metroid collaboration: “IF WE DON’T GET A METROID COLLAB THIS WAS ALL FOR NOTHING.” I’m going to say that’s a valid concern.

However, some are not riding the hater wave; @BallofTower, which is legitimately their name, stated, “Personally I look forward to doing this.” Okay, tower ball, go ahead and do your thing. @Quantum__ took it deeper, calling it “the Ship of Theseus version of Bungie” and labeled the studio “cooked.” That’s quite harsh, but, to be fair, that might be true given the… creative direction here.

The bigger issue, though, is that this feels like a distraction. @NovaDelta1337 got this right: “I feel like the ball is a distraction from something else that we’ve missed.” And that tracks, honestly. With Stasis losing its Unstoppable anti-champ capability (as @icarusryses7 pointed out), with players begging for updates to subclasses, this ball thing feels like Bungie going, “Look here! Shiny object!”

Then, there’s the faction that’s all the way done with it. @GTWrathian didn’t mince his words: “This is so fucking stupid.” @sirsamalot10 concurred with, “Wtf is this even.” And a fair point was raised by @cosham14, “Not really a FPS mechanic is it.” Like, imagine lining up a sniper shot only to see a teammate roll past you as a glowing orb. Peak Destiny, right?

Of course, some are going with the flow (pun intended). @_Kinu420_ dropped the meme of the hour: “fuck it, we ball.” And @MrSarcast1c called it the “Electric hamster ball!!!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ’€πŸ‘πŸΎ.” So at least for memes, it’s a hit.

But here’s the thing-Bungie’s track record for experimental mechanics is a bit of a mixed bag. Remember the sparrow racing league? Exactly. This ball thing could also be a fun and quirky addition or just another gimmick that is gonna gather dust in a vault. Now that The Edge of Fate is a little over a year away, players have ample time to stew over their opinions.

One thing for sure: Bungie knows how to get people talking. Whether that’s good, well, that’s up for debate. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see whether this dark matter ball will make it as the next big thing or just another weird footnote in Destiny’s ever-growing lore.

And hey, if nothing else, we have meme gold out of this. Silver lining, right?
