The announcement for Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S arrived out of nowhere, literally bombs dropped out of the blue. Throw in the yet-to-be-announced Nintendo Switch 2 for kicks. Yes, it is true. A grand title from the fighting series has made its comeback and will be launched across the next-gen consoles. No concrete date yet; however, that hype train is already halfway through its station.

For anyone living under a rock (or just busy clattering buttons on Tekken), Virtua Fighter is one of the original 3D fighting games-a title from way back in arcade days, and VF5 itself dropped back in 2006. But this ain’t just a lazy port; R.E.V.O. implies major upgrades, but Sega is keeping tight lips about it.

Early-bird! The mention of Nintendo Switch 2. It is not even yet officially announced by Nintendo, but Sega was casually name-dropping it just like that. Now isn’t this confirmation back door way? Either way, this marks that the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. might be among the very early major fighting games on the Switch successor.

Various guesses are going around among fans as to what R.E.V.O. stands for. Remastered? Enhanced? Visual Overhaul? Or perhaps all of the above. The original VF5 was re-released under the name Ultimate Showdown last 2021, but this feels bigger. Crossplay? Rollback netcode? New characters? Sega remains tight-lipped, but the hype around #VF5REVO is already huge.

As for platforms, it is a given that PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are included. Switch 2? Not so much. Should it run smoothly on Nintendo’s next hardware, they’d be onto something big for fighting games on the go. Akira combos on a bus will be worth their weight in gold.

Could be that the remake includes all previous DLC or starts anew. Knowing Sega, however, expect a whole lot of juicy upgrades. Maybe a story mode that actually matters? One could dream.

So what’s next? Details, of course. The future announcement is being teased by Sega, so keep those eyeballs peeled. Whether you’re an old Virtua Fighter hand or someone who’s never tossed an elbow before, this is quickly becoming one of those you’re going to want to either be a part of or at least witness.

In the meantime, dust off those fight sticks: Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. will be there soon, bringing pain to every major console. One way or another, it’s just waiting time now or practicing not to get bodied by Pai’s endless mix-ups.

And Switch 2? Okay, so that’s pretty much confirmed. Thanks, Sega.
