And now the topic of discussion is Tyler1-astoundingly loud and hyped League of Legends streamer-and trying his hand at fighting games and Modern-only Street Fighter. That’s right, there will be no Classic control allowed-no more leisurely paced Modern gameplay. And he is getting big names to fight over the prize. The event kicks off this Sunday, with the FGC abuzz with commentaries, opinions, and lots of confusion.
A little bit of background: Modern controls in SF6 are pretty much a one-button scheme with the emphasis on accessibility compared to messy, complicated motion inputs in which special moves and combos require execution using motion and buttons from several position inputs. Hate it or love it, this guy Tyler1 is putting together a tournament. The lineup is not fully disclosed, but from all the replies, it seems it will bring in some seriously big names. Some players that we know: Punk, who has already been seen practicing Modern Chun-Li, and NYChrisG, touted as “Modern’s greatest champion.”
But still, some aren’t amused by the setup. Some say it’s a cringerada (rough translation-if you don’t speak Portuguese-meaning “cringe fest”). Others ask why some Modern stars weren’t invited, like FemShepFGC, who has downplayed her skills but is highly appreciated among the community. Then again, and this is more of a debate, is whether or not Modern controls even deserve to have a tournament of their own. Some asked, “Can we skip ahead to SF7?” That’s a sentiment, for sure.
But the usual fighting game discussion has to have some drama, right? Somebody, for probably the worst-ever fighting game “legend,” tagged Dark Syde Phil (DSP) wondering why he wasn’t in the mix. Following that another reply showed up mocking and calling the Classic-only tournament offensive, while the rest were there just for chaos, like that one guy who posted that GIF of a one-button combo with the caption One button time!
What is even more insane about that is that this is not just some random kind of online bracket: Tyler1 is known for those histrionic over-the-top productions and his personality, so it must never be a boring event through charge. Whether you love Modern controls or hate Modern controls, are just hoping that the high-level players get forced into adapting a foreign style, this is a wild tourney.
Alright, now mark it down as Sunday, grab your popcorn, and sit tight for the madhouse. Will Punk tear through the entire roster? Will there be enough salt for all the cast members? Will Tyler1’s shouting break the Twitch decibel limit? We can only wait and watch; what is for sure is that this will definitely be one of the most discussed events in the FGC in a while.
Hopefully, if nothing else, it can be a breather from yet another Classic vs. Modern debate. No? Yeah, I see that debate still raging in the comments.
