When you think of the first-person shooter genre, there are many series that have moved the gaming industry as a whole in the right direction. However, one of the most beloved and iconic is the Half Life series. These games were so instrumental for getting many into gaming in the first place. They’ve built a cult-like following over the years, which is hard to say about a lot of other first-person shooters today.
It has been so long since Valve has introduced a new installment. The last game — Half-Life 2 –came out all the way back in 2004. It’s now 2019 and needless to say, fans have grown skeptical about any semblance of continuation. Fortunately, we can all take a big sigh of relief as Valve is working on another title.
Only this time, it’s a VR game. That’s right. The next game in this iconic franchise will be Half-Life: Alyx. It’s currently set to release in Mach of next year, which if you think about it, isn’t that far off. Fans are just a couple of months out from getting their hands on this highly anticipated project that Valve is saying is a prequel to Half-Life 2.
Yes. This isn’t Half-Life 3, but at least Valve hasn’t killed off the series entirely. That would be foolish of them. They know how much passion their fans have for their intellectual property and if they have to pump out a shortened VR experience to bide time until they’re ready for a full-blown release, that seems perfectly okay with many.
To celebrate this VR experience, Valve has shown off an amazing trailer of all the action and immersive visuals you’ll experience in Half-Life: Alyx. It’s not long, but it sure does paint quite the immersive picture. Like most VR games, you just see your character’s hands. This unique angle helps bring you into the game’s world, one that looks to be one of the most detailed to date in a VR game.
Everywhere in this game there are jaw-dropping details. You can tell Valve wanted to come out of the gate swinging. We also see some of the alien creatures you’ll be battling against. Like most other Half-Life titles, they look creepy and menacing. You’ll certainly have to be on guard at all times when navigating through the futuristic settings.
Even if you haven’t followed this franchise since the beginning, Half-Life: Alyx looks like a phenomenal VR experience. Again, it will be available in March of 2020.
