Out of all the hack and slash games to have success over the years, one of the very best is the Devil May Cry franchise. These games always feature intense action and lore that’s easy to grow attached to. Still, there are a lot of gamers that haven’t experienced these games.

That might change thanks to the Nintendo eShop. This week, it added the iconic Devil May Cry 3 to its vast library. This game made its debut in 2015 and at the time, it was highly regarded for its combat mechanics, visuals, and story. It’s great seeing a game this old showing up on the eShop. It should give Switch owners the perfect opportunity to relive some fond gaming memories or perhaps experience this title for the first time.

It’s actually the special edition, too. It includes new modes and an upgraded weapon swapping system that many fans prefer as opposed to the original designs. So even if you’ve played the original Devil May Cry 3, this unique edition may be worth taking out for a spin.

If you’re not familiar with this game, it’s a prequel to the original Devil May Cry. Dante is much younger and he’s at odds with his brother Virgil. It’s a pretty gripping story filled with a lot of twists and turns. The story is mostly told through cinematic sequences, which at the time, were beloved by the hack and slash community.

Devil May Cry 3 introduced a lot of new combat systems compared to the previous installments. The North American version was surprisingly quite difficult. Fortunately, the special edition balanced out these issues to make gameplay more forgiving.

Every level is well designed and pits Dante against some interesting foes. In addition to taking out waves of demons, you get to enjoy some platforming and puzzle action. The mix of these elements keeps gameplay varied and they’re well spaced out.

As you progress through each level, your performance is rated. The rating system is based on the amount of time it takes you to complete each stage. Thus, there is an added incentive to get through the sections as quickly as possible for bragging rights.

Devil May Cry 3 is definitely one of the better installments in this storied hack and slash series. It set the tone for many games to follow, and it’s great to see it finally make its way to the Nintendo eShop. It’s worth every penny.
