The world is in a pretty chaotic place right now. The spread of the coronavirus is changing up the very fabric of society. People are getting sick and thus mass self-quarantine procedures are being implemented. Now that more people are spending time at home until this virus settles, there is more time to play video games.
Publisher Square Enix is looking to help out gamers during these tough times by offering a couple of free titles. One of these is the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider, developed by Crystal Dynamics. For absolutely no charge, you can get it for free on the Steam platform. It won’t be available for free forever, so if you’re looking for an epic adventure and some amazing platforming, this is definitely worth adding to the collection.
Tomb Raider made its debut in 2013 and is the tenth installment in this long-running franchise. In many ways, it’s one of the very best. Much like what was done with Tomb Raider: Legend, Lara Craft received a new origins story. We follow Lara Croft on an island called Yamatai.
She’s tasked with saving her friends while trying to survive a maniacal cult. What’s different about this story compared to previous installments is Lara isn’t the battle-tested warrior that many fans have come to know her as. Rather, she’s just a common explorer who’s forced to rise to the occasion when thrown into a chaotic sequence of events. In this way, Lara has never been more sympathetic. You feel for her plight and want to see her succeed in her quests.
In terms of gameplay, Tomb Raider shines in a lot of departments. For instance, the survival elements are a huge focus that Crystal Dynamics wanted to put front and center. You’ll spend a lot of time exploring the island, which is well-detailed and has a lot of diversity. You can move through paths in a lot of unique ways, such as utilizing ziplines and climbing. The various platforming mechanics make exploration all the more intriguing and immersive.
The developer helps break up the pace through quick time events. They occur throughout vital points of the story, and you’ll have to be quick on the trigger to successfully get through these sections. All in all, Tomb Raider is a pretty competent action-adventure game that should give you plenty of content to enjoy during these darker days. Thanks Square Enix for being so generous.
