Avalanche is the central heroic group of Final Fantasy VII. They’re back with a vengeance this week as Square releases Final Fantasy VII Remake on Friday.

Avalanche is a rag-tag group of freedom fighters who are trying to stop the evil Shinra corporation from killing the planet with its ruthless business practices.

“United they stand, against dark forces,” Square said in the official tweet. “Meet Avalanche, a passionate groups who stand alone against the tyranny of the Shinra Electric Power Company in Final Fantasy VII Remake.”

The first member of Avalanche that you have to know is Barret. He is the hot-headed leader of the team with a heart of gold. Barret is a large man who wears sunglasses indoors and has a gun grafted onto his right arm.

Then you have Tifa, the martial arts master who runs the Sector 7 bar called 7th Heaven. In the original game, Tifa’s bar also served as the secret headquarters for Avalanche. Tifa fights with a flurry of punches and kicks to overwhelm her opponents.

Jessie is the other female member of Avalanche. She is a tech expert who specializes in explosives. In the demo for Final Fantasy VII Remake, her playful and flirtatious personality is on full display.

Biggs is also a member of Avalanche. He was kind of a one-dimensional character in the original game, but it is clear that he is going to be getting a lot more personality and screen time in the remake.

Wedge is a portly fellow who is an optimist. He seems to desire friendship and sees the best in people.

Then of course there’s Cloud Strife, the mercenary for hire who accompanies Avalanche on their mission to disable the Sector 1 Mako reactor. Cloud is quiet, stoic, and nonchalant in his actions. He claims to not care about the fate of the planet or anything beyond his next paycheck.

In the original game, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie were not vital pieces to the story. They were secondary characters who didn’t get a lot of attention of screen time. That appears to be changing as Square expands on the Midgar portion of the original game.

Players got to know Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie much better in the one hour demo of the game that came out for the PlayStation Network than they did throughout the entirety of the original Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be coming out this week, on Friday, April 10, 2020.
