A single tweet came from Square Enix in connection with the Switch 2 and games, and it very much angered a lot of gamers. The tweet showed some titles already released and some titles planned for the new console, leading to an outpouring of reactions from gamers: some were hyped, some were salty, and some were downright demanding.
To begin with, the tweet was pretty much straightforward; Square Enix said more or less, “Hey, got a shiny new Switch 2? Here’s what we are bringing.” But the replies? Man, gamers weren’t just asking for ports; they wanted remakes, remasters, and criticisms of the Switch 2 itself! One person said it was a “bad Steam Deck,” and… ouch.
Top of the list? CHRONO TRIGGER. Many were begging for a remake or, at least, a re-release. One user, Crashykk, just bluntly asked, “How about that Chrono Trigger remake for Switch 2?” And honestly? I could not agree more. A timeless game, all cries for a proper modern implementation are delayed way too long.
Enter the Dragon Quest III confusion. Square-Enix kept referencing it while everybody was correcting them “Uh, that’s Dragon Quest II, not III.” Flagitious proclaimed, “That is not Dragon Quest 3. That is Dragon Quest 2.” So, did Square Enix get it wrong, or was it just a placeholder image? Dragon Quest fans were not about to have a good time regardless.
Some more: There were now doubts about the Switch 2 itself. Smitha_80 warned, “Now frens, hear me out: Switch 2 has numerous problems.” Scratch_Point_Z straightforwardly said, “There is currently no compelling reason to buy a Switch 2.” Ouch. Fair though.
And then demands, oh yes, the demands came. Remakes of Final Fantasy IX, ports of Dragon Quest VIII, Kingdom Hearts exclusives—oh, just about everything. AaronPICAR threw in Xenogears. So, Square Enix wanted to tease a few Switch 2 games, and instead, they got a full-on licensing fair.
The optimistic ones, though, wanted to figure out how to play their favorites once again. “I’m really gonna get FF7 Remastered a third time, aren’t I?” joked Keeneye_02, and honestly? Mood.
The key-cards drama tho? So-discussed. Tons said Square Enix was a big no-no if they ever released those games as digital-only key cards instead of physical editions. “Please don’t do key cards,” one call came out from ShadowlessTwil1, followed by another: “Bad Square Enix for bringing games on Switch 2 as game key cards,” from Penftw.
So what’s the verdict? Square Enix teased some Switch 2 games but said the end-users want MORE-games, remakes, physical copies, and maybe even a surprise or two. Will Square Enix listen? Time will tell. But one thing is clear: the hype train is running full-force, and the players are ready to board… provided the games are worthy.
And hey, if you’re still holding out for that Chrono Trigger remake, you most certainly aren’t alone. Maybe do some more tweeting at Square Ex-ing another time.
