We’re just about a couple of weeks out from the heavily anticipated Mortal Kombat 11, developed by NetherRealm Studios. This title picks up where Mortal Kombat X left off, with Raiden finally being fed up with the way recent events have gone. He’s gone dark, putting into motion a sequence of events that the story’s main villain, Kronika, is seeking to reverse.
There are many intriguing characters in this upcoming title, including Jade, Erron Black, Sonya Blade, Kano, and Jacqui Briggs. NetherRealm Studios has been doing a great job of promoting each of their characters with a trailer reveal.
Their most recent one featured the iconic Kotal Kahn, who made his debut in Mortal Kombat X. Right off the bat, you knew how pivotal his role would be in the MK universe. He’s got a striking look, and the very name Kahn is associated with power and divinity.
In Mortal Kombat X, Kahn had a huge role in shaping Outworld after Shao Kahn was defeated by Raiden. Unlike Shao Kahn, though, Kotal Kahn was a sympathetic ruler. He never did evil things or wished harm on anyone in Earthrealm.
Well, he’s back in the latest installment. From the trailer, we can see a few new adaptations. First off, he jumps into the scene as some sort of panther or tiger. It appears he has animality capabilities, which have been heavily featured in Mortal Kombat games throughout the years.
As far as his looks, he appears to be more rugged and intimidating. Instead of his skin being blue like it was in the previous installment, it now appears to be layered in blue paint. When Jacqui Briggs interacts with him in the trailer reveal, he claims it’s for his sacred race.
In terms of his combat, he appears to be one of the more sluggish characters. That’s not to say he’s not brutal. His moves do quite a lot of damage, particularly his lethal sword. It has great distance on it too, which should prove to be effective for mid-range attacks. At one point in the trailer reveal, he sticks it into Briggs and begins to slowly saw away at the midsection. It’s an effect that is particularly lethal.
As mentioned earlier, Kahn has the ability to transform into his spirit animal with the right combination. It’s a nice change from the previous characters we’ve seen in MK11. All in all, Kotal Kahn is a welcome addition to this already fantastic cast of characters.
