During E3 week, developer Square Enix revealed Marvel’s Avengers, which will be released on May 15, 2020, and the multiplayer mode was one of its most touted features. However, it looks like that will only end up being a small part of the game.

While it’s probably very appealing for fans of Marvel’s stories to team up with their friends to beat up bad guys, the reality is, that won’t be possible during the game’s campaign mode.

Of course, Square Enix didn’t go into great detail about the multiplayer mode for the upcoming title, so it was unclear whether or not the campaign mode would have a co-op option.

Crystal Dynamics recently confirmed that the upcoming Avengers game will have a linear story with a ton of scripted set pieces, a lot like games such as Uncharted and Tomb Raider. So, because of that, it’ll be hard for Square Enix to add a multiplayer component to the game’s campaign mode.

As for when players will be able to team up in the new Avengers game, well, that will come during the game’s side missions, which aren’t as heavily scripted as the main narrative. In addition to that, players will be able to choose any hero they want as their playable character for these side missions, and, of course, it’s also possible to do these missions on your own.

Aside from showing off the game’s first reveal trailer, Square Enix hasn’t shown anything else regarding their Avengers video game. However, the developer did show some gameplay behind closed doors at E3, and according to those who were lucky enough to see it, all of the moves look great, but something felt off about the visual experience.

As for the story itself, the game will apparently feature a brand new Avengers story, so those who are familiar with the comic books and/or the movies won’t have to play through a story that they already know.

The new Avengers game will feature five playable heroes: Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, and Black Widow. Of course, there’s a good chance that more characters will be added to the game after it’s released next year.

According to Kotaku, each character in the game will have their own, unique fighting style, so all of the game’s characters will feel completely different, as they probably should. On top of that, most of the playable characters’ signature moves have been described as looking crisp and robust, which is great news for all the Marvel fans.
