The third season of the College Perks program has just been announced for Marvel Rivals, and is not being well-received by many players. The move has sparked some fiery debates among the players, the bigger chunk calling it unfair to some non-students while some others see it as added excitement of free skins that change through time.
It’s simple: if you are in college, you verify status and enter into receiving 10 trial costumes and MVPs throughout Season 3 and 3.5. Which actually means unlimited access to some of the best premium skins like Thor or Moon Knight, or even a Spider-Man MVP animation. Pretty sweet, right?… Well, depends on who you ask.
The tweet announcing it got a divided reaction from all involved. Players such as @Armando_Alv_ were so pumped about this: “bro this are some that i was gonna get holy w finally rocking that thor skin goated.” In contrast: @Brandonmwm07 responded: “Nice way to alienate a lot of your playerbase who aren’t in college.” Uh-oh.
Then came the trial concept. @2ombie7ron was a bit more opinionated: “Trial? Lol not worth all the effort tbh.” But on the opposite side, @VirdeStrone really appreciated that aspect, “Already own the thor and invis skin but excited to have a rotating closet of skins each season.”
The conspiracy theories began howling; @GodHaveMusica just went crazy: “if you are a student, don’t sign up for this, the ccp wants access to your information so they can test a social-behavior credit system.” Yikes.
Besides perks, players want updates now. @ThrowinRainbow argued: “How about fixing the matchmaking? I’m tired of it and I have friends who are uninstalling the game cuz they got tired of it.” @theosintpi shortened that reply to a classic: “Remove the EOMM.” (That means Engagement-Optimized Matchmaking, for those who aren’t into gamer jargon.)
Then the battle pass question was lobbied. @e6MeInwF6O6kg2K: “Where’s the battle pass? Why students in Chinese server could also get free bp?” Then @Foxhound_N10 had a far different question: “Did they make a ranked deathmatch mode as a second option yet with rewards to bring us all back?”
Thirst cannot be contained. @stradeheart demanded: “WHERE IS LOKI SKIN WITH A THONG ON.” Priorities, people.
The verdict: It might be a wonderful support for students, but the backlash spells that Marvel Rivals still has a long way ahead to please the rest. Be it matchmaking fixes, permanent rewards, or—let’s be honest—that Loki thong skin—the devs have their work cut out for them.
In the meantime, students get to bask in glory while the others wait, and whine. Before even going live, Season 3 promises to be one hell of a ride.
