Mario Kart World really dropped the mother of Easter eggs-it turns the entire free-roam world upside down! Just imagine-the entire world flipped by one single command and players going crazy over the weird discovery.
The secret was leaked in Dexerto’s tweet, which is just the beginning of the insane visual transformation that takes that game-its well-known tracks-and turns them into their backward and totally disorienting versions. Some considered this just the great secret, while others stated that this truly has something to do with unlocking Mirror Mode-Mario Kart’s classic mode where tracks are reversed for an added challenge.
But here’s the thing-it’s not as simple as “press a button” to unlock this. Grok, in his detailed reply, specified that there’s a whole list of things the player has to get through first: 40 P Switch missions, collect 10 Peach Medallions, finish all Grand Prix and Knockout Tours, and top it off by beating the Special Cup on 150CC. Then and there, the cutscene finally plays, and the world is flipped upside down in a crazy kart-racing fever dream.
The opinions differed. Some, like TechFreakOnline, declared: “without a secret, a game isn’t a game,” while BradKat joked: “now I can crash into myself!” LuaTzz, however, was flabbergasted that players had been hacking into backdoors for the majority of the game even before it had landed in most people’s hands-this should be the hallmark of speedrunning!
Then there were discussions on whether or not this was an actual Easter Egg or just a normal unlockable. Xerez_ said Mirror Mode has to be unlocked first, and without that, the trick simply doesn’t work. Dexerto later clarified that there is indeed a hidden set of missions tied to it, and they linked a guide for players wanting to trigger the secret cutscene for themselves.
Not everyone seemed to be impressed, though. Mr.Kibz said the game was “boring” and should be “for 10-year-olds” (ouch!), whereas Wrestle_G was just wondering how this stacked against other Mario Kart titles; a fair question, really.
Be that as it may, from here on out lies the also mystery: How did the devs pull this off? Debayo_xx said, “Did they mirror the entire map or is this some programming magic?” Looking at how seamless the whole thing looks, I would be inclined to say one, classic Nintendo developer programming magic.
For those wanting to retire onto one of these thrills, guides are still recently popping online for how exactly to unlock it. And if you are a hardcore Mario Kart player, that might be your wildest twist yet- literally.
So if you had thought Mario Kart couldn’t get any weirder, think again. And with that, excuse me while I puke a little from the backwards driving.
