Grand Theft Auto V was by far the most successful game that developer Rockstar Games ever created, as over 100 million copies of the game have been sold ever since its release back in September of 2013. On top of that, the game’s online community is still very active, as Grand Theft Auto Online is still one of the biggest money makers out there.
Due to the success of the series’ fifth installment, and due to the success of the series overall, nobody is surprised to hear that Rockstar Games is already working on developing another Grand Theft Auto game. But, prior to this week, the details regarding GTA 6 have been scarce.
According to a Reddit user who claims to have been given information regarding the next Grand Theft Auto project by a friend who works at Rockstar Games, the lead character in GTA 6 will be a man, which contradicts earlier rumors that, for the first time ever in the series, it was going to be a woman.
Also according to the user, Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development since 2012, which is one year before the fifth game was released, Of course, at the time, GTA V was likely in the final stages of development, so Rockstar probably assigned a small team to start working on the follow-up.
After releasing GTA V, Rockstar immediately began working on Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released in October of last year. So, it’s unclear how much focus Grand Theft Auto 6 has gotten since the studio began working on the game back in 2012.
The Reddit user is also claiming that the story will be set in the 1970s-1980s, and part of it will take place in Vice City, while other parts will take place in Liberty City and a new fictional location that is based on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Players will reportedly begin the game’s story as a wannabe, up-and-coming drug lord by the name of Ricardo. The character starts off as a grunt who has to smuggle drugs from Vice City to the game’s new, fictional South American location.
The apparent leak also stated that the next Grand Theft Auto game is heavily inspired by the Netflix series Narcos, which chronicles the rise of the drug trade in Columbia.
Unfortunately, though, the leak stated that as of right now at least, there isn’t a release date window set for Grand Theft Auto 6. It’s also unclear as to when Rockstar is going to reveal the project, and it’s very possible that fans of the GTA series will be waiting on the reveal for quite a while, as the next game will likely be a next-gen release.
