The Marvel’s Avengers game got a big boost this week when they revealed a brand new character in a trailer at the New York Comic-Con. That character is none other than the famous Ms. Marvel, who will play a very important role in the game.
Crystal Dynamics, the developers behind Marvel’s Avengers, revealed Ms. Marvel, also known as Kamala Khan, to excited fans on Friday during one of their panels. According to the trailer, Kamala will play a significant role in the plot of Marvel’s Avengers. After her powers start to manifest, Kamala goes looking for answers by meddling with an evil company known as AIM. What she discovers forces her to bring the Avengers back together in the aftermath of Captain America’s death.
Although no one noticed at the time, Crystal Dynamics has been teasing Ms. Marvel since their first A-Day trailer months ago. Kamala appears as a little girl fawning over Thor during one of the helicarrier displays. In the latest trailer, we see the final part of this scene where she tells the hero her name is Kamala Khan.
Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American superhero who first arrived in the Captain Marvel comics in 2013. She took up the name Ms. Marvel after that. Her powers include the ability to shapeshift, stretch her body, increase and decrease in size, and the ability to heal her own body. In the trailer, we get to witness Kamala shout “Embiggen!” and grow into a giant version of herself.
In a recent interview with the PlayStation blog, game creator Shaun Escayg explained his take on the iconic character. “Her unique abilities as Ms. Marvel make her a character every person will want to play,” he said. “Kamala Khan is the defining ingredient that makes our game stand apart from any Avengers story you’ve experienced before.”
In the trailer itself, we see Kamala reach out first to Bruce Banner for help. He brings her to Tony Stark and tries to get rid of her. Both men start arguing. But they start to take her seriously when she reveals the data she has stolen from AIM.
The reveal of Kamala Khan has vastly improved the fan expectations for the game. Many fans felt the characters shown within the first Marvel’s Avengers trailer looked incredibly different from their film and comic counterparts. This reveal came as a bit of a disappointment. Of course, the characters have changed over time, but there was always a persistent characterization.
Marvel’s Avengers is scheduled to launch on May 15th of next year. Look for it on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
