Before Call of Duty: Warzone was released earlier this week, the rumor was that its modes would support up to 200 players per match. But, after Infinity Ward officially revealed the free to play expansion for Modern Warfare, we learned that the aforementioned rumor was incorrect, as each match, as of right now, is only capable of hosting up to 150 players per match.
However, the 200 players per match reports weren’t incorrect, as Infinity Ward has confirmed that 200 player matches are coming to Call of Duty: Warzone in the future.
While speaking with USA Today, Patrick Kelly, who is the co-head of Infinity Ward, said that they’re already testing Warzone with 200 players and that they’ll expand the player-count soon.
“I do think the world you play in is going to be undeniably unique,” said Infinity Ward’s co-head while speaking with USA Today. “For one thing, we are initially going to roll out with 150 players, when you are typically seeing 60 to 100. Actually, I can tell you we are already playing with 200 players. We are going to release that a little bit later.”
As of right now, the max squad size for Warzone is three, so we’ll see if Infinity Ward ups the max squad size when they up the player-count. As you can see from the quote above, Kelly didn’t mention anything about expanding squad sizes in the future.
In other Call of Duty: Warzone news, the developers have confirmed that changes are coming to the game soon, the most notable of which is that players who down enemies will be given credit for a kill, because, as of right now, if you down an enemy in Warzone, you aren’t given credit if you don’t finish them off.
“In the next title update the person who downed will get the kill credit. The change just missed release,” said Infinity Ward’s director of multiplayer Joe Cecot.
There are likely a ton of changes coming to Call of Duty: Warzone soon, so its first update should be pretty sizable. As of right now though, we don’t know when the update will be released, but it might be safe to assume it’s coming within the next two weeks.
Despite some of its issues, Call of Duty: Warzone has been a tremendous success, so don’t be surprised if future Call of Duty games also get a free to play expansion. Also, more modes will likely be added to Warzone in the future.
