A wild moment of crossover happened between Fortnite and Squid Game, and literally, the players are going crazy-if ever in-game eliminations could serve as the narration of something like players going insane! Origin Fortinite Twitter account teased the collab with a cryptic tweet with players eliminated one by one, ending with, “Player: You -TBD❔” A sweaty sick moment for everybody! While all the hype energy is spilling over for the collab, the real gameplay? Yeah, an absolute mess.
Legally speaking, some had their fainting spells, thinking Epic might have gone underhand on Netflix’s IP. This is a nice, legit collaboration, Grok—the AI agent of chaos and everyone’s favorite—confirmed: “The Fortnite x Squid Game collaboration appears legal. It’s an official partnership announced by Epic Games, including themed skins and maps, suggesting proper licensing with Netflix.” So yeah, don’t bank on any Netflix lawyers jumping on the Battle Bus anytime soon.
Now, take a seat for the downturn. Now, players are raging about cheaters within these Squid Game-inspired modes. VersaFN8 yelled, “The Ranked and aimbot players are now playing in Blitz royale making everyone’s games fkn boring. You will not win any matches playing blitz today because of them.” Ouch! Then CGarboid posted clips on how a hacker was destroying lobbies, “Another hacker in reload.” Meanwhile, that anti-cheat squad at Epic must be chugging down energy drinks right now.
Then there’s the mode: no dedicated Squid Game playlist, instead, Epic thought it was cool enough just to slap it under Reload, probably kinda awkward. Inoshi_Bacon summed it up: “A real game mode would’ve been better than it being in reload 💀.” Another rage from players is due to campers ruining the Red Light, Green Light mini-game: “The worst part is it’s impossible to play cuz some dude camps the end,” says WokeLuigi. Classic Fortnite experience, really.
In the meantime, requests are still flooding in. “Add Breaking Bad to the game,” pleads some player. Another begs for lobby tracks to be brought back. And then there’s the eternal console versus PC war in earnest with Jean Harvey yelling, “PC PLAYER: Eliminated. EPIC GAMES CONSOLE AIM ASSIST CHEATING: ON.” It’s pure anarchy, but then again—that’s Fortnite.
So, is the Squid Game collab cool? Absolutely. Is it running smooth? Not even close. And that right there is the best thing about Fortnite: a gloriously glitchy, disorganized mess that pulls us in time and time again. On that note, I am off to the finish line to face a suspicious camper. G. G.
