The emote for the iconic 1980s hit, “Take On Me,” by the Norwegian pop band A-Ha, has just been released in Fortnite, and understandably so, there is lots of backlash. As announced by the most popular Fortnite leaker, ShiinaBR, this emote makes it possible to dance away to A-Ha’s instrumental intro—yes, just the instrumental intro! And now, the gamers are going insane.

Backlash was almost instant. Comments kept rolling in: Anything from “Nolicrimsinal😭🙏” by NicotargusRenovado to RatDuke121: “This emote is ass.” Ouch. A few people stood behind the song choice, however, like CHKN_BRO, who said it was “hot ass” while dancing to it. So, what’s the sudden hype? Why is the emote causing such uproar?

Condense in a sentence: The song uses lyrics to carry the greatest weight. The chorus is iconic, and Fortnite players were eager to scream out “TAAAAKE OOOON MEEEE” while their characters showed off some moves. Instead, a synth-heavy intro was provided along with a dance that really doesn’t fit the vibe. MysticMoonKnt said it best: “Meh no lyrics, not worth it.” And really, quite fair.

Various speculated this was not the first time Fortnite has pulled out one of these. TheCinemaSeeker felt Artistic might be somehow dodging bit the costs of licensing, pointing out a similar situation with “Blinding Lights”, which also has no vocals at all. But at least “Blinding Lights” sounds good without any words, said ImTheOnlyRandom; “Take On Me” is just not the same without that beloved chorus.

Then there’s the dance. KRATOJIRO says the emote “should have been the viral girl turning her head around”, referencing the TikTok trend that rejuvenated interest in the song. Other dancers, such as FiveHargreev, wanted the comic book effect from the original music video. Instead, we got… whatever this is. Even players who already owned similar emotes like Best Mates were scratching their heads wondering why Epic just didn’t commit.

Sadly, there are a few who do not hate this emote. The_Truth_Sir says it is the “best emote in months,” and Soulbound_TV gave it some worthy praise, saying: “Now I just need the map to turn black and white too.” But generally speaking, everyone agrees that Fortnite really dropped the ball on this one. Or, as scatstacks puts it, “No lyrics and dance is stupid, they fumbled this song 😭😭😭😭😭.”

Will Epic package a fix? I doubt it. But hey, if this floats your boat, then by all means, get this emote using ShiinaBR’s support code—but do not expect to go along with it.
