Okay, so Fortnite must be brewing something again–when has it not? Now this demand for the much-loved bananas mascot, Peely, has been caught between what very clearly is a teaser shooting at a metro station. Weird and chaotic all at once-with Epic Games written all over it.

Sharpening the shot is a Twitter user named @Axocado1031, with a later post by a Fortnite insider, showing a giant sentient banana in a suit standing in something that looks like a subway or a train station. Well, you can make a lot of fuss about dramatic lighting and urban setting in the grand tradition of viral marketing stunts. But what for, indeed?

Fortnite knows well enough when to come out with really weird crossovers and serendipitous occasions. Remember when they dropped the entire Travis Scott concert smack right in the middle of battle royale? When they Org-welled the island with mechs? Oh yeah, Epic loves to keep players wondering! So this little Peely-metro-station business? Seems like another one of those big clues.

Could it be a teaser for a new in-game event? Maybe a cinematic trailer for some season? Or let’s shatter all sanity standards, a weird real-world ARG (augmented reality game) tie-in? Fortnite’s become stranger than that. The fact that it’s Peely among all characters is really the cherry on the cake. The banana has been a secret agent and also a frozen treat; what is next?

All the theories are going berserk. Some are speculating that it ties with the so-called “Underground” season where the map slowly begins to invade subway tunnels or some kind of hidden cityscape. Others are adamant that it’s just the beginning of a collaboration with John Wick (again) or the Matrix. Honestly, with Fortnite, anything goes.

One thing comes for sure: random and Epic are not two names and colors for the same thing. Should they make this metro shoot with Peely lead, they better deliver with this one. Probably the worst-kept change to the internet at launch.

And then? More mysterious teases, more random blackout events ingame, or maybe a real live-action short. Whatever it is, Fortnite has got the hardcore players hooked again.

Until then, we’re stuck with speculating and wondering why on this planet a banana has to catch a train. Maybe he’s just an important man with some important job to go to. Or maybe… he’s about to start the next big Fortnite war. We’re down either way.
