“Appearances can be deceiving,” Square Enix said in the tweet. “When you meet Red XIII in Final Fantasy VII Remake, you’ll learn quickly there’s more than meets the eye! To help get you through Friday the 13th, grab some Red XIII themed wallpapers and avatars from the Final Fantasy VII Remake website.”
When you go to the website, you’ll find both an avatar set and a wallpaper, which can be downloaded for free. The images are truly awesome shots of Red and show off the amazing job that Square did in the redesign of this iconic character.
Red XIII is one of the most unique party members to ever appear in a Final Fantasy title. He is a four legged feline-looking creature that can viciously combat enemies and uses a hairpin as his primary weapon.
But he’s not just a mindless beast. Red XIII can speak and reason just as well as any human member of the party. However, the party doesn’t encounter Red until the near the end of the Midgar portion of the original game.
Final Fantasy VII Remake takes place entirely in Mdigar, flushing out the original opening chapter into a full length adventure. It will serve as part one to the multi-episode story that is Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Since the party won’t encounter Red until near the end of the game, he will be a different kind of party member than Barret, Tifa, Aerith, or Cloud. Whereas you can control those characters, it has been confirmed that Red XIII will fight alongside the party while being controlled by the game’s AI.
It’s similar to how Summon Materia monsters work. Summon spells like Ifrit, Shift, Leviathan, Choco Mog, and others will show up, fight on their own beside the party for a time, and then vanish.
If is likely that, once the second game rolls around, Red will be a fully controlled party member, the same as any of the others. While we have no word yet on how far into the original story, this second game will go, it’s possible that we could get more information on his backstory in that game.
Final Fantasy VII Remake will release on the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020.
