Elden Ring: Nightreign has gone into release with critics giving all varying opinions. Some call it a masterpiece. Others…nay. The new DLC for FromSoftware‘s RPG currently holds a Metacritic score of 78, good enough for maybe a couple of small centres of brilliance, but not necessarily the universal acclaim the base game had. Why so?
VG247 featured the judgment at a perfect 5/5, calling it “this triumphant evolution of Elden Ring’s formula.” Then the side from IGN and RPG Site, both 7s, saw great combat, poor repetition; and then came The Guardian and VGC at 3/5s “uninspired” and “a step back,” respectively. Ouch.
Gamers remain divided. Some can hardly contain their excitement—literally. “Elden Ring also has multiplayer, which I use quite often. It’s fun!” whispered one gamer. Others were not along. “Looks like a bunch of mods,” another kicked back. Which begged the question whether this should even be the DLC, much less a full standalone title.
Multiplayer seems to be the biggest point of contention. Some fans have enjoyed so much about co-op Elden Ring action that they would probably dye their hair blue, while others feel completely left out. “Basically confirmed it’s not for me. I can only play solo or with randoms,” one player lamented. Others are just openly calling it a cash grab, which… yikes.
Then we have the happy Xbox crowd. “This has got to be the dumbest reason to prefer a system,” one user joked, referring to Nightreign being present on all platforms. Shared pain (or joy) is great after all.
Long story short: Elden Ring: Nightreign is proving to be a hard sell. If you love your chaotic multiplayer Souls action, it’s probably for you. If you were praying for another deep, lore-heavy single-player expansion… well… probably not. Until then, maybe wait for a sale. Or play the base game again.
Either way, lively debates. The big upside to FromSoftware titles, really; everyone has an opinion, and none of them can be right. Probably.
