Man, if you haven’t been watching the stuff coming out of the Eastern game studios, you’d be missing BIGLY. A recent massive thread from @NikTekOfficial sparked a gargantuan discussion on how Eastern devs have been really killing it, putting the fans halfway into hype and skepticism. The actual tweet was quite simple: “Eastern devs are absolutely cooking right now!” with some tasty footage (actually, it was footage of an upcoming Chinese title called Blood Message). And oh boy, did this garner a REALLY WILD response!
So first of all, the Blood Message trailer; it looks extremely cinematic. We’re really talking Sony first-party production value. @_darkk_knightt_ called it a beautiful gem, even freaking out about a Lord Buddha statue that appeared in the footage. Then, of course, gamers @DedicatedBeard and @DurumluZurna almost instantly demanded “real gameplay,” wondering if it was all pre-rendered cinematics.
And then, of course, all these conversations very quickly turned into a classic East VS West. Some players (@savedsynner) attacked Western studios, saying they’re “too busy chasing diversity and PC culture while the Eastern devs are making great games”-ouch? Others (@heyhey916) said that Eastern games just feel the same, employing their Japanese themes, which… I mean, kind of true but mostly misses the entire point?
In the meantime, here’s a honey spiced with a hardware take: User @YikeYuke suggested that Chinese tech giants such as Xiaomi or Huawei should join the console race, undercutting Sony and Microsoft on price while securing Eastern exclusives. Not really the worst idea we’ve heard, honestly.
But here, things got messy. Several reactions went ahead to call Eastern trailers “flashy vaporware from studios nobody’s heard of,” and @ThePolderBaan countered with something along the lines of: “Yeah, what does Nintendo even do?! Or Game Science? Or Square? Or Sony Studios Japan? Or MiHoYo?”
Truthfully: From the big boys to fresh faces, Eastern devs can really sell you some visually stunning and mechanically well-designed experience right now. It is also hard to overlook the Immediate influence From Software has cast on bringing Genshin Impact and the Soulslike revolution to the rest of the world.
And credibility-wise, while Western studios release broken games with 60GB day-one patches (@Vegnon2, definitely not our words here), many Eastern titles launch polished and ready to go. That, however, is that cynical cinematic trailers-looking reason. They’ve all gotten burned.
Culminating here: Good games can come from anywhere. That said, the East is plating a feast at the moment, and some Western kitchens appear abateful. With some luck, Blood Message will manage to fulfill the promise made in the trailer, but one thing for sure-gamers are very interested in what these devs have cooking.
