Trendy now is a scenario in which the tweet sparked all sorts of wild speculations; it’s not the most absurd idea Bungie could have thought of, after all. The tweet read curiously simply: “😂 Imagine if they put the Death Star in the game | #Destiny2,” and the meme machine got into full swing as the community churned theories and outright demands for a Star Wars crossover.
And hence the question: why are we even entertaining the possibility? The thing is, Destiny 2 runs these gigantic world-ending superweapons from time to time. Fans were quick to just suggest that the Dreadnaught from The Taken King and the Almighty from the Red War were pretty much Destiny’s Death Stars — space magic to one side and Stormtrooper aim to the other. One user named @ahortontweeted just said something like: “They already did that twice with the dreadnaught and then the almighty.” And, if you think about it, him being correct. The Dreadnaught could wipe out entire solar systems; the Almighty was nearly capable of eating Mercury and consequently obliterating the Sun. So, uh… Death Star who?
By contrast, players crave a full-Star Wars crossover more than anything. Some responses just escalated the sarcasm and kept on joking, proposing a Crucible map on the Death Star rather than a raid where Guardians take their fight to “General Taniks” as the final boss. And honestly? Definitely down for that space clear, where our ships actually get the chance to do something other than be a loading screen.
Not a fan though was one person with the idea (very mildly advanced) that the recent ahem …borrowing of art assets by Bungie for Marathon may mean that the Death Star would basically be a thinly disguised reskin of Almighty. Ooh. Others, like @Lasnimble, just stated outright: “I’m just a Star Wars hater,” and, well, fair enough.
The funniest thing: it’s not the first time Destiny players have begged for some absolutely wild crossovers. Remember when everybody thought the game was going to add Lightsabers because of the new Arc staff animations? Or how Pyramid Ships had people convinced that the Witness was just a Destiny version of Emperor Palpatine? A Star Wars collab feels as good as inevitable—or should feel that way, at least.
So, the Death Star in Destiny 2? Yeah, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. But the mere fact that there is somewhat of a discourse around such an idea speaks volumes about the way in which the community enjoys mixing some sci-fi fun with Bungie lore. At least, here’s to hoping they get motivated to produce a strike where we once again take out the Almighty…
Until then, we’ll be dreaming of a raid that sees six Guardians fight Darth Taniks in the Death Star’s reactor core. Because, honestly, that’s the expansion we all deserve.
