With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launching, Kojima’s next little brain teaser has been unlocked in the PlayStation Store. Coming out from its shadow cast by the 2019 controversial-but-beloved antecedent, social media has afforded greater voices to the discussion with hype, confusion, and above all, Kojima weirdness.
The announcement tweet from PlayStation merely instructed, “Leave your mark beyond the UCA,” referring to United Cities of America from the initial game. Judging by the replies, gamers may actually be doing that: On the one hand, screaming with joy; on the other, expressing utter confusion.
Players were sharing some secret stood stuff by this time: @ASGunShot said, “I BEEN PLAYIN IT FOR A BIT ITS AMAZING.” Then there is @VTheRaven, holding the Collector’s Edition, two days prior, absolutely raving “SKORCHIN’ HOT!!” Meanwhile, others were uncertain. @a__a__r__o__n joked, “I’ll wait for the YouTube help videos to amass first,” which is kind of fair, given that Kojima games have been hard to follow with their… unconventional storytelling.
Then, from the Game of the Year debate, @simonnewme boldly entered with “Game of the year and possibly best game of the generation,” while @ColdWor06681000 had to step with a “10/10 F”-GameSpot reference. But then @ArchBishopNegus had to come and burst the bubble, answering another GOTY claim with “How does that make it GOTY? Lay off the drugs dude.” Classic gamer discourse.
The confusion is a given with its release. @IIIIIlllIlIIllI was unhappy, unhappy that he could not even customize his suit or use pre-order bonuses until he finished the main game, calling it laughable. Then we have @Deezzyxo, loudly lost with “What’s up with the new rust gen for previous old gen owners??” (Nobody ever answered that.)
Then comes the eternal banter of the console wars. @LICKINTHEGUNN couldn’t resist the put down aimed at Xbox players: “Another game @xbox has to wait for hahaha, thank god I own all the platforms.” Meanwhile, @Kingbossborne and @ColdWor06681000 got into a mini-debate: will the game run on Nintendo Switch 2? (Spoiler alert: Probably not.)
While the indifferent ones still exist, they talk about those that have yet to install the first game. @BigD_204 even admits, “I haven’t even started the first game yet 🤣,” which honestly, same.
Now, this is what needs to be spoken about: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has arrived and is immediately conjuring the kinds of love-it-or-hate-it reactions only known Kojima can; irrespective of whether you are jumping right into it or passing on it while determining if it even deserves to be hyped—there’s one thing all can agree on: the game is going to be talked about for the next hundred years. So, if you excuse me, I still have some deliveries to make. Or maybe I’ll watch an explainer on YouTube.
