Days Gone Remastered has landed on the PS5, and it’s a scorcher. In case you were tired of seeing a refraction of Deacon St. John’s post-apocalyptic hell on earth, well, here’s your time to go back there with shiny new upgrades for the next gen. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to get some guns onto Carlos being the R.I.P. cult leader that gives you the creeps?
Carlos? He is the sort of person who would make you triple-check if your doors were locked at night. He is the leader of the R.I.P. cult called the Rippers because, essentially, that is what they do. However, he’s no ordinary bad guy; he’s got layers-a dark onion. The Rippers are essentially like a death cult. They believe suffering is the way to enlightenment. Spoiler alert: it’s not.
Okay, Days Gone Remastered is far from just looking great. Just a single take will reveal how gargantuan the leap is to the PS5 version: 60 FPS and 4K resolution with drastically reduced load times (no more analyzing loading screens) accompanied with all the DLC. Oh, sure, mention the DualSense support: from every shotgun blast to the screech of the motorcycle skidding away, the mechanics will have you shivering with adrenaline as you whiz past Freakers.
Back to Freakers. Do you still remember those? The monsters-zombie hybrids who really made things difficult in Oregon? Well, they’re back and still very much a danger. But with the technology that PS5 carried, the hordes look so…hordy. Imagine those things in hundreds chasing after you with not a single stutter from the game. So impressive-yet-so-horror-fuel.
Still considered a slow-burned plot (some people adored it; others didn’t), but if world-building with a protagonist is equally gruff and tragic, Deacon’s story opens in a different way from the second time onward. Oh, right: those bike mechanics? Chef’s kiss. There’s nothing like patching up your bike during the apocalypse to make you feel like a wasteland MacGyver.
For all of you who are utterly new to Days Gone, here goes the pitch: open-world survival horror accompanied by what shall be described as an emotional gut-punch. You’ll be scavenging, you will be fighting, and inbetween, you’ll probably shed some tears when Deacon shrieks into the skies (and he does it every time he can). But who steals the show? The atmosphere. Oregon has never looked this gorgeously terrifying.
So yes, if you somehow own a PS5 with an itch to go all in on some post-apocalyptic action, Days Gone Remastered is dead set for you. Just stay far away from Carlos-he’s disturbed. And maybe keep your lights on while playing. I mean, just saying.
Now, grab that controller and make sure you stay alive, or get eaten. Or get indoctrinated. Either way, the ride will be one hell of a trip.
