Normally, this is the kind of statement that sets up a really charming juxtaposition: Cyberpunk 2077: The Ultimate Edition actually running on the Nintendo Switch 2. Yes, you read that right. That very same game that, by the inability to even run with dignity on so-called last-gen consoles, blackened the name of platforming now finds some weird way into Nintendo’s very own next-gen handheld. And naturally, gamers have had quite a few thoughts on this.

From the Royal Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account came a tease for the big reveal linking to an IGN feature where their “top techie,” Charles Tremblay, discussed the technical sorcery behind the port. But really, does it matter now? After the catastrophic launches on PS4 and Xbox One, the real question is not how they have done it but why it even exists.

The replies started getting more skeptical. @itsmeepui joked, “It’s not optimized, it just got better hardware 🤣🤣,” while @Whells69 continued to berate the developers: “You can’t seriously brag about sub-30 fps with no NPCs on screen.”

There are a few things one can safely say: Not everyone was shy about the name, for instance. @The_Viksonian congratulated CD Projekt Red on going ahead with the physical cartridge, “Thank you again for doing physical on cart. Hope you get a lot of new sales on this version.” On the other hand, @FamilyGuyFAN44Y, who claimed to be a PS5 Pro player, congratulated the team on their “success.”

The Switch 2 version is an issue, yes, but there is certainly more on the players’ minds. Numerous replies, such as that of @RealLoneWolf18, demand an explanation for that long-promised Mac version: “You announced the Mac version last year, but a Switch 2 version we just heard about is coming out first? Is the Mac version canceled?” Others such as @opiategalore went with the simple, “next dlc when.”

Now, the elephant in the room. Performance. @doc_hex1337 sarcastically suggested “shrinking the resolution with DLSS till it ran ok” might be the secret, and @DonUntilImGone followed up: “Made it look like a game from 2010?” A little harsh, but fair.

Whether the reactions were mixed or not, one thing is concerning: CDPR will not shy away from this. Whether this port would raise the rock-bottom popularity of Cyberpunk or just add another layer for memes remains to be seen. But there is a win in all of this: Switch 2 owners finally get to see Night City—albeit at a delightful 40fps and 1080p, as @iamgamer41 pointed out very well.
