Blizzard has announced that the layer unlocks for Torghast, Tower of the Damned content in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will now be account-wide rather than being character specific.

This change helps to add in a wonderful amount of alt-friendliness that this expansion has thus far done a great job of promoting. By making it so that players can have the unlocks account-wide, players are being spared a considerable slog repeating content for the sake of unlocking layer 8s.

If you’re unfamiliar with Torghast, the content serves as the primary source of Soul Ash, used to craft and upgrade legendary items in the newest expansion. The higher the layer, the more soul ash one earns, as well as increasing the difficulty.

Prior to now, players needed to grind out up to the eighth layer, unlocking them one at a time – Layer 1 unlocked 2, which then unlocked 3, and so on, all the way up to Layer 8.

The only saving grace of this was that players unlocked them for all wings once they unlocked a layer. If a player only ran, say, Skoldus Hall to get the 8th layer unlocked, they could then run Coldheart Interstitia and any other wing on an 8 as well.

But when one created a new character and got them to 60, not much was more obnoxious than having to run eight layers of Torghast just to get them to the point where they were useful. This was enough to stop many players from grinding out the endlessly-repeatable content.

With this change, players will have the unlock available immediately, assuming that they’ve managed to unlock Torghast as needed on the character in question.

So it won’t be an automatic unlock, as players will still need to go through the introductory questline and find their way into the Tower of the Damned to begin with. Once that’s done, though, players won’t have to worry about repeating their grind.

This is especially useful for characters with more than a few alts trying to find a class they prefer. Many players have struggled with finding something to stick with as a result of all the changes leading into Shadowlands, as well as the continued changes with balancing.

Regardless of whether you have one alt or ten, this is a welcome change that’s certain to make it so that players are able to get up and running on a new character sooner. If you’ve been putting off unlocking Torghast, you won’t have to soon!
