The new update from DICE gets Battlefield fans all hyped up yet again; this time, it’s really about blowing things-the true essence that constitutes Battlefield. A little peek into what appears to be pre-alpha destructive mechanics is visibly displayed in the latest Battlefield Labs Community Update, and it truly looks chaotically brilliant.
A short clip-as a wall is blown to shreds, players break through those buildings like the Kool-aid man. No fancy scripted animation; just raw, physics-based destruction that is going to change the way you navigate maps. If this is only pre-alpha, just imagine how wild the final game will be.
Not that we would be surprised if that tweet goes unanswered. Battlefield fans usually have a lot to say about most things. Busy replaying the clip for the umpteenth time, perhaps? Maybe still awaiting the dust to settle after the most recent DICE hype bomb detonated and went dark for months.
But be that as it may, this has always been a defining element in the Battlefield franchise: destruction. What could be more unforgettable than Bad Company 2-the game that allowed a player essentially to take a building down to rubble? Players have been waiting since then. If this update is anything to be believed, DICE might finally be bringing it back in a big way.
Of course, pre-alpha usually means their promises of what they will deliver are subject to change, improvement, and-or let’s just say-pudding before launch. Developers always hype up destruction then reel it in once they realize all of the maps will be the world’s ruins in five minutes after release. But hey, maybe at least they will have salvaged the expectation.
This is all we can view for now as a very tiny clip and then infer from it all. The question at this time is: will there be a return to “golden age” environmental destruction orjust another example of “looks great in trailers, safe in-game”? Only.time will tell.
