One of the most exciting aspects of the Assassin’s Creed franchise is waiting between games to see which time period it will explore next. We started off in the Crusades before moving onto Renaissance Italy, The American Revolution, a pirate-infested Caribbean, The French Revolution, the British industrial age, Ancient Egypt, and most recently, Ancient Greece.
Now, it seems as though vikings will be the next focus for the now-iconic franchise, if rumors are proven true.
The game is rumored to be titled Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok, and will take place in and around Norway. It appears that there will be a heavy focus on Nordic religion, most notably the gods of Asgard.
Ragnarok is the Norse apocalypse, in which Thor the god of Thunder would die in battle against the World Serpent, and the fire god Surtr would run amok. Ragnarok was said to end with the deaths of several gods, including Odin, Thor, Loki, Tyr, and Freyr. At the conclusion of Ragnarok, the world was to be submerged in water, only to emerge again, newly fertile.
It is unclear to what level the Norse gods would play a part in this rumored game, however, there were many supernatural elements at play throughout Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the most recent title in the franchise.
Players were able to take on creatures from Greek mythology, including the Minotaur, Medusa, and the Sphinx.
It is rumored that in Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok, players will actually travel to Asgard, the realm of the gods, where they will meet Odin and the rest of the Norse pantheon.
Assassin’s Creed has always done a good job of explaining away supernatural phenomenon by tying it into the First Civilization, the race of super advanced immortal beings who predated mankind. Whether Odin and his kin would be remnants of the First Civilization remains to be seen.
It is also rumored that naval battles will return, though not to the extent seen in previous games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It has also been said that players would be able to recruit NPCs to join their cause. This is a mechanic we have not seen much since Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.
The last two games in the series predated the Assassin brotherhood, so it will be interesting to see what time period this new game will take place in.
Assassins Creed Ragnarok is heavily rumored to be a next generation title that will release on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Project Scarlett. No official information has been released by Ubisoft.
