Ubisoft has been hard at work with their flagship title Rainbow Six: Siege. Just recently, we discussed the two new operators being added, the enigmatic Iana and bullish Oryx. These two are arriving with Operation Void Edge, but they’re far from the only addition that Ubisoft has planned.

Now, Ubisoft is going public with their plans to bring Rainbow Six: Siege to the newest console generation of Xbox and PlayStation. This news comes to us compliments of Windows Central, who interviewed game director Leroy Athanassof on their plans for the title.

According to Athanassof, the title is planned not only to be coming to the next gen consoles but also to be a launch day title. Unfortunately, the game director is unable to offer an exact date.

“Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles,” the director told Windows Central. “What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.”

It makes perfect sense that Athanassof is unable to offer a date. After all, Ubisoft has no say on when Microsoft and Sony decide to launch their upcoming consoles. Those release dates can only be decided by the organizations themselves.

Athanassof discussed a similar issue regarding the potential feature of cross-play, stating the following:

“Again, this is mroe a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play – have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen…”

Athanassof goes on to speak of the inevitability of cross-play, and how the companies will eventually be more or less forced to include it to continue staying relevant. We’ve already seen cross-play on a wide variety of titles, even allowing players to play between console and PC.

At the end of the day, sadly, Athanassof and Ubisoft cannot force the console giants to bend to their will, or even the will of the gaming community at large. You’d be hard pressed to find someone against cross-play at this point.

Regardless of what may come with cross-play or the release date of the upcoming generation of consoles, we can rest easy knowing that Ubisoft has every intention of making Rainbow Six: Siege available right at release.
