It seems like there’s a new platformer every month. That’s great news if you like these throwback games. Instead of focusing too much on story and jaw-dropping graphics, addicting gameplay is put at the forefront. It’s the reason why this genre is still fun to play even today.

One of the more unique platformers that just got an October release is Valfaris. It’s set in space and also has a heavy metal vibe infused throughout. Needless to say, it’s pretty intense and makes moving through the stages an adrenaline-pumping experience from start to finish. It should be mentioned that this game is not for the feint of heart. In fact, you probably want to play this title at home because of its gore, violence, and partial nudity.

Now that we have that out of the way, Valfaris is an absolute blast. It’s one of the most hardcore platformers that has come out in recent memory. The fortress of Valfaris has reemerged near a dying sun after disappearing  suddenly. What was once a pleasant place now has dark entities with evil intentions. You play as Therion — son of Valfaris. You just come home to discover this darkness. You set off on a journey unlocking the mysteries of this evil presence, as well as blasting it back to hell.

Like traditional platforming games, you’ll have basic actions like jump, dodge, and attack. The developers at Steel Mantis left you well equipped with an array of different weapons. Experimenting with them to find weapons that suit your play style is awesome.

As you delve deeper into the now dark Valfaris, you’ll discover grotesque bosses with unique abilities. As you destroy them with your own special skills, you’ll get to explore a lot of beautiful environments. What’s particularly unique about them is their pixelated design, which can be attributed to the creativity of Andrew Gilmour. The graphics are so unique and really give Valfaris a unique flare that a lot of platformers today simply don’t have.

In addition to amazing 2D graphics, the soundtrack will keep you locked in the intense action. It’s the perfect music for this platformer, much like the scores in the Doom games. It’s a brutal harmony that will leave a lasting impression well after you’re done. The game goes live on the Steam platform on October 10, 2019.
