Earlier this month, both HBO and PlayStation Productions announced that a TV series based on 2013’s third-person survival-horror game The Last of Us. But, other than announcing the project, neither side provided much information, instead opting to tease it by saying that the series is “coming soon.”
According to the series’ writer and producer, Craig Mazin, the HBO show won’t begin production until The Last of Us Part II is released in May, with reason likely being that Neil Druckmann, who is the executive producer of the upcoming show, is heavily involved with TLOU Part II, being that he’s its co-creator and creative director.
“We can’t start on it right away because they’re still finishing up the second game,” said Mazin on his podcast called Scriptnotes. “But we’re going to dig it in full, full earnest pretty soon.”
We should have a lot more information about the HBO show after The Last of Us Part II is released on May 29. Of course, the game was originally supposed to be released back in February, but shortly after receiving its first official release date, developer Naughty Dog announced that they needed more time to perfect the highly-anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive.
In other show-related news, it was recently revealed that Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed the original soundtrack for The Last of Us, will be involved in the HBO show. Santaolalla will also compose the soundtrack for the game’s upcoming sequel.
