The Final Fantasy VII remake was one of the biggest games at this year’s E3, and it’s now been confirmed by Square Enix that the long-awaited remake will be playable on the PlayStation 5.
Advertisement“I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles,” said Yosuke Matsuda, the CEO and President of Square Enix, while speaking with Game Informer.
But, while Square Enix’s President confirmed that the Final Fantasy VII remake will be playable of the PlayStation 5, he didn’t confirm whether or not it’ll be achieved through backward compatibility, or if the game’s remake will get a standalone release on Sony’s next-generation console.
Matsuda didn’t say whether or not the game’s remake will also be available on the new Xbox console, Project Scarlett, which is set to be released late next year. But, given the fact that it’ll be playable on the PlayStation 5, it only makes sense for it to be playable on Microsoft’s next-gen console.
During E3 week, Square Enix showed off an extended trailer for the Final Fantasy VII remake, which showed off a bit more of the main story, and featured a bit of gameplay. If you missed the trailer, then feel free to check it out below.
Square Enix has revealed that the Final Fantasy VII remake will span two separate Blu-Ray discs when it launches. Moreover, the game will be an episodic series, with each episode being described as a full-scale Final Fantasy game. As of this writing, the developer hasn’t confirmed the number of episodes that will be in the game’s long-awaited remake, nor have they given a release window for the episodes.
They did, however, confirm that the Final Fantasy VII remake will launch early next year, as it’s set to be released on March 3, 2020.
Upon release, it’ll have been nearly five years since Square Enix first announced that they were doing a remake of Final Fantasy VII, as the first trailer was shown to close out E3 2015.
Square Enix is promising that the characters in the game’s remake will shine brighter than ever. On top of that, the combat shown in the game’s E3 demo does look pretty good, so the game should get a ton of praise when it’s released next year.
Of course, there are some pretty lofty expectations for the game given the fact that its original ended up being one of the best video games of all-time.
