An epic Sea of Thieves Community Direct has just concluded, leaving the community buzzing about the new updates. There is so much happening—the Insider Program announcement going public, barebones details on the custom servers—some are not happy about it.
The first and foremost big headline? Custom servers are finally becoming a thing. Some players, including CAPTAIN GG_R🏴☠️, were all about that once-in-a-lifetime moment worthy of “a big round of applause.” However, not all of them were happy. From DIDDY DUMS’s point of view, “The main player base might be disappointed since they were maybe expecting something else.” Then there’s lone ginger who put it into one tweet: “Well that’s the servers even more dead.” Ouch.
Then the whole PVP-versus-PVE debate begins. Silky 🏴☠️, who in over 2000 hours since the PS5 release, classified cheaters and runners as the worst thing in the game. John 🇺🇲 went all in on mocking the idea of paying to get to Safer Seas with friends, stating it was the dumbest idea given all the restrictions. Meanwhile, ToxicHelix is dreaming large and hoping custom servers would also see fan-developed modes like Parkour or TDM.
Of course, there are questions concerning the Insider Program. With the NDA lift coming very soon, DodoMuncher21 wondered if they could finally share old screenshots and clips from the builds. Sea of Thieves replied somewhat cryptically that players do have the right to talk about past content; it just means they should not have any captured media to share since it would have been against the rules at the time.
Shortysmalls302 then got random but even more important stuff, with this question: “Did we fix controller settings yet?” Because priorities, right!?
What’s the verdict? Mixed, just like always. Custom servers are a big win for some (shout-out to Jinxed Mushroom and Betta VP 🇮🇹🔱), whereas others think that Rare is focusing on all the wrong things. The seas, however, are about to get a lot more interesting (or a lot emptier, depending on whom you ask).
