Last week, Sony revealed that the PlayStation 5 will release during next year’s holiday season, which wasn’t much of a surprise to any given that Microsoft will also release their next-generation console in the winter of 2020. But, as of this writing, there have been no launch titles announced for either console.
On Tuesday, the official PlayStation Magazine UK Twitter account put out a poll that asked players which game they’ll be playing when the PS5 releases next year, and it listed four major titles that haven’t yet been confirmed for Sony’s next-gen console.
The poll, which you can see below, listed four games that might be PlayStation 5 launch titles: Horizon Zero Dawn 2, The Last of Us Part II Online, Killzone Online, and Ghost of Tsushima.
A few weeks ago, Sony announced the release date for The Last of Us Part II, which will come to the PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020, and shortly thereafter, developer Naughty Dog confirmed that there won’t be a multiplayer mode in the game when it launches. But, in the very same post, they said that an online mode will come later, and they also suggested that it’ll be released separately from TLOU Part II. So, it’s realistic to expect that it’ll come to the PS5 either at or after it launches next year.
Horizon Zero Dawn 2 hasn’t officially been announced, but a few months ago, Guerrilla Games, the developers behind the Sony exclusive title, listed several openings that required applicants to have experience with open-world games, so it’s clear that the sequel to the 2017 release is in development for the PlayStation 5.
If HZD 2 is going to be a PlayStation 5 launch title, then it’ll probably be announced in the first quarter of next year. In previous years, it’d be realistic to assume that it’ll be announced during June’s E3 event, but now that the annual convention isn’t what it used to be, Sony will likely reveal it during a State of Play stream.
Ghost of Tsushima hasn’t been seen since it was revealed during 2018’s E3 event, and given the fact that there hasn’t been a release date attached to it, it’s realistic to expect that it’ll be released on the PlayStation 5. Also, of the games listed, it has the best chance to be the main launch title for Sony’s next console.
It’s also worth noting that it’s not likely that all four of the games listed in the poll will release alongside the PlayStation 5, and the purpose of the poll is to take the temperature of the PS community to see which game they’d like to see launch along with the PS5 next winter.
