The PlayStation Classic received so much hype when it was first announced. The concept of having a mini console sounded so appealing, if not just for purely aesthetics and shelf decor for hardcore gamers. Sony was looking to take the same approach as Nintendo did with their mini systems.
Unfortunately, it fell short in a major way. Firstly, the PlayStation Classic didn’t have that many amazing titles. Sure, there were a couple worth checking out again for nostalgia. These included Twisted Metal, Tekken 3, Resident Evil, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Rayman, and Grand Theft Auto. Although these games are fun, they aren’t enough to warrant the $100 that Sony was asking gamers to pay initially.
Thankfully, price-drops have occurred recently to make this mini console more appealing. Now at Walmart, you can get it for just $39.99. That’s a substantial price drop from the original price, which could entice hardcores and even casuals to take the plunge. The question still remains. Is this mini PlayStation worth roughly $40?
To some, that answer is a resounding yes. Sure, the games currently on it aren’t particularly amazing and their gameplay is not responsive in some cases. However, the PlayStation Classic has so much potential if it’s modded. There have been dozens in the community who’ve hacked it, incorporating their own skins, games, and sound effects.
The hacking community has even released various software files, which give people the ability to download whatever games they want onto the system. This gives gamers the opportunity to play some of the greatest PlayStation titles, including Spyro, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Crash Bandicoot. These are staple games that every PlayStation fan should play at some point if they haven’t already.
It doesn’t seem like Sony is taking action against these modding attempts either. Maybe that’s because they realize their shortcomings. Either way, it’s great to see the gaming community coming together and improving a product that in theory, seemed amazing. So many gamers have poured hours of their time and energy into making the mini console better in so many different ways.
Best of all, they aren’t charging for their efforts. The software mods can be downloaded for free. After downloading a couple of files and unzipping them, you can experience the PlayStation Classic the way it should have been designed when it first came out. It’s quite a fun little machine, and gamers should really give it a chance.
