Nintendo fans everywhere are excited for the upcoming release of Luigi’s Mansion 3, and Nintendo is working hard to bring up the hype. They have declared October to be the Month of Luigi and are dedicating a whole Twitter account to looking back at the history of the famous brother. The Super Mario UK Twitter account is now Super Luigi UK until the release of the game on October 31. Till then, it will be “dedicated entirely to Luigi and his esteemed history.”
This is a call back to the Year of Luigi from several years ago. As we reach the third in the haunted Luigi’s Mansion series, it is good to look back at the foundations of this character. From its conception to its eventual permanent addition to the Nintendo family.
Luigi’s first appearance dates back in 1983 in the arcade game Mario Bros. The character was controlled by the second players and continued to be the prominent player two in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and many other titles. It was not until Super Mario Bros. 2 that Luigi became a primary character.
In more recent years, Luigi has been written as a spinoff character usable in games like Mario Party and Mario Kart. He has had three separate occasions through his history in which he was the starring role. The first was in 1991 when he stared in the educational game Mario is Missing! and in 2001, the first Luigi’s Mansion was released on GameCube.
In every game in which Luigi is the star, his job is to rescue his brother. Originally the character was simply a palette swap of Mario, but since then, he has developed personality, style, and a character all his own.
In March 2013 to March 2014, Nintendo declared “The Year Of Luigi.” Games released during this window had an extra emphasis on the character. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Dr. Luigi, and a new level pack New Super Luigi U was released for New Super Mario Bros U. There was even an unlockable Luigi-themed version of Mario Bros. titled Luigi Bros. included in Super Mario 3D World.
As we reach the next installment in this brother’s saga, fans wait expectantly for some surprise Luigi content to be released. The celebration will be ending with the release of Luigi’s Mansion 3 and the exciting addition of Gooigi to the Nintendo world.
