Over the past year, Netflix has been on a spending binge, acquiring three separate game development studios: the one that created Stranger Things 3: The Game in March, the one that created Stranger Things: Puzzles Tales in the same month, and the one that created Oxenfree in September. Now, Netflix has made public its intention to not only acquire already-existing game creators but also to begin developing its in-house gaming studios.

Amir Rahimi, Vice President of Netflix Game Studios, is happy to make the following announcement: “Today, we are excited to announce that we are launching an internal games studio in Helsinki, Finland, and Marko Lastikka will serve as the studio director.”

This is another step toward achieving our goal of creating a world-class games studio that will bring a wide variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games to our hundreds of millions of members located all over the world. These games will not contain any advertisements or in-app purchases.

Next Games, located in Helsinki, Finland, will become home to the unnamed new development firm soon opening. However, there has been no information provided regarding the game the company intends to develop, and Rahimi has stated that you should not anticipate discovering this information any time soon.

It’s still early days, and we have a lot more work to do to give a great gaming experience on Netflix, Rahimi said. Because the development of a video game can take several years, I am pretty pleased to see that we have been able to lay the groundwork for our game studios in just one year, and I am looking forward to revealing the results of our labors in the years to come.

Another Netflix video game title, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, has been released to 2023 due to worries over quality control and the need for more time to localize the game.
