Here’s something you may not know about: the GeForce RTX 2070 Super and the RTX 2060 Super have three variants. But isn’t it a bit redundant?

Video cards actually have their own unique numbers. This will help ID the type of the graphics card that’s installed in your system. However, there was the report swirling around that Nvidia stopped doing this.

This is why it’s surprising that this comes up once again.

In this case, the RTX 2070 Super has three models–the 1E84, 1EC7, and 1EC2. The RTX 2060 Super, meanwhile, has three IDs–1FO6, 1F47, and 1F42. In contrast, the RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and the RTX 2080 Super only have one device ID.

But then again, there’s speculation that the RTX 2070 and the RTX 2080 are on their way out. This is the natural progression with the release of the Super series. There’s just no sense to buy the vanilla brand when you can upgrade at the same price point. The GeForce RTX 2060, however, will continue to be rolled out as a budget graphics card.

According to W1zzard, the 1F47 and the 1EC7 IDs have already been assigned to the 2070 and 2060 Founders Edition. He also noted that the value of the 40 Hex is what differentiates the vanilla products from the Super cards.

W1zzard really made good detective work in trying to illuminate Nvidia’s process of rolling out the Super series. The 40 Hex represented a single bit difference between the vanilla and the Super graphics card. He suggested that this is done by adding to or taking away a small resistor from the PCB. The physical modification is the reason why you can’t flash different graphics cards even if they share the same ID.

This also helps Nvidia get rid of its inventory without spending too much on making new graphics cards. This also prevents confusion in the way the vanilla graphics cards and the Super graphics card are priced.

But then again, retailers and distributors might be left on the losing end with this strategy by Nvidia. You just can’t flash the pricier model so you can sell it for less even if it helps with the manufacturer’s inventory. W1zzard speculated that Nvidia is helping its partners through rebates and other types of compensation. But this is just a theory.
