FromSoftware’s latest project, Elden Ring, which is an open world game that was created in collaboration with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, was finally revealed at last Sunday’s E3 press conference, but the details regarding the game and its story are still pretty scarce.

However, while speaking with IGN, FromSoftware’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, gave a bit of context to Elden Ring’s reveal trailer, and he expanded on if the game will be similar to the developer’s other titles such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

While speaking about Elden Ring’s main narrative, Miyazaki said that it’ll be very similar to Dark Souls, which means that the game’s story will be told atmospherically rather than having pre-set cutscenes. This is much different from the developer’s most recent release, the aforementioned Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which relies on cutscenes to further the narrative, which is unusual for a FromSoftware title.

The biggest reason why the game’s narrative will be furthered along via the environmental atmosphere is that players will be able to customize their own character. To sum it up, Miyazaki wanted to make the game more about the world than the player’s character. Furthermore, Elden Ring’s director also told IGN that the game’s NPCs will have a much greater appeal than in any of FromSoftware’s other projects.

Miyazaki also briefly touched on what George RR Martin contributed to Elden Ring by saying the following.

“Thanks to Martin’s lore, Elden Ring’s world and characters naturally have a lot more depth and personality.”

From all accounts, Miyazaki and George RR Martin very much enjoyed collaborating with one another for FromSoftware’s latest project, which still doesn’t have a release date attached to it. But, whenever it does become available, it’ll likely be a massive hit with fans of the Dark Souls series.

The developer’s most recent release, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, was revealed at the Game Award back in December of 2017 and was released a little over 15 months later. So, if that’s any indication, players might not be able to get their hands on Elden Ring until late-2020, or early-2021.

As for when FromSoftware might reveal more about the project, well, at some point later this year, it’s expected that PlayStation will hold their own event where they’ll reveal the PlayStation 5. So, they could show off a few new games during the event, and one of them could end up being Elden Ring.
