Feral Interactive has officially released the 2006 classic Company of Heroes on the Apple iPad. The game has been completely redesigned just for the tablet with high-resolution graphics to take advantage of its Retina screen.
Company of Heroes was initially developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega. Feral Interactive handled both the development and publishing of the iPad port.
“Company of Heroes is the critically acclaimed and enduringly popular World War II game that redefined real-time strategy with a compelling combination of fast-moving campaigns, dynamic combat environments, and advanced squad-based tactics.” states the App Store description, “Command two crack companies of American soldiers and direct an intense campaign in the European Theater of Operations starting with the D-Day Invasion of Normandy.”
The game is available for $13.99, and there are additional in-app purchases. Players can also download additional missions and skirmish maps free.
There are a few additional features specifically for mobile gaming, including an enhanced “Group Selection Panel” to make squad management easier. A new setting for the “Optional Command Wheel” lets players make quick decisions. Now players can draw sandbags, barbed wire, and tank traps directly onto the map, and the “Tactical Map” has been upgraded with more details and functionality.
Currently, multiplayer is not available. When asked about the feature on Twitter, Feral Interactive stated, “We’re assessing the feasibility of adding multiplayer in future.”
On Twitter, gamers asked additional information about the mobile port of the game. Some asked if Company of Heroes will be on iPhones in the future, and Feral Interactive replied: “We’ve not said it’s coming to iPhone, but if it were that’d be classified information.” Luckily, Bluetooth keyboards are supported, including cheats.
The game needs iOS 13.1 or later and at least 6GB of free space, but the developer recommends 8 GB to avoid any issues during installation. Not all iPads are supported, and the full list is available on the App Store page.
The developer is continuing to release patches that may have appeared since the game was released. So far, there has been a patch that fixes “minor issues.”
Fans of the game have been asking if there is an Android version in progress. The website for the game only lists iPads.
Company of Heroes is available now for iPads in the Apple App Store.
