Donkey Kong Bananza has been causing quite a stir, and the players can’t seem to stop talking about it. Geoff Keighley himself, creator of The Game Awards, had called it “incredible” in a tweet, and the Internet went truly berserk. Unadulterated banana-peel-slipping chaos took place.
First things first: The hype is REAL. Players even called it “potential Game of the Year,” with some going so far as to label it the best Nintendo game ever. Marsh (@BayonettaQueen) put it quite rightly: “#1 GOTY contender. Such a creative platformer.” Yeah, and honestly? They might just be onto something. It has all the appeal of a classic Donkey Kong game, along with new mechanics to transform the experience of collecting bananas with Diddy into a whole new kind of adventure.
But, of course, some want to hold off on crowning it. Some are waiting on the bigguns: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2, or Ghost of Yotei. Chucho (@CH_Cho23) came with the shade: “Nah there’s no way a brain-dead monkey game wins GOTY.” Harsh! Others say the game will just end up winning “Best Family Game” anyway, just like Nintendo always does.
And all this is the calm, before the real storm begins. The replies are a bloodbath, fighting over who deserves the GOTY. Remember the spats last year when the Black Myth Wukong stans lost their minds over Astro Bot’s win? Yeah, history could well repeat itself. NolaDigitalDude27 (@Dpedroza1998) added, “Y’all say the same shit every year and don’t do a damn thing.”
There is also the Kojima cult. One user (@carlos_Ogilvie) demanded that Geoff “make the god Kojima win” instead of “this pathetic game.” Those are some bold words, but, hey, passion is passion.
Now, the conspiracies cannot be left out! Some say Geoff was forced to tweet about Bananza. Others say they “bullied him into it.” AnAverageGamerX (@AnAverageGamerX) celebrated, “We bullied Geoff into tweeting about Bananza. Let’s go!!!!”
Ignoring the chaos, Donkey Kong Bananza is an absolute blast. Whether or not it really is the Game of the Year or just a very fun platformer, players are loving it. And with Metroid Prime 4 still yet to pull itself out of the shadows, the whole debate is very much alive.
So, grab your bananas, folks. This ride is only just beginning.
