A major announcement determined by Bungie has been that from July 8 to July 22, 2025, the major Destiny 2 expansions, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, and The Final Shape, would be free for all to play. Hundreds of players across the globe had a great opportunity to enjoy the very utmost of campaigns and also to get exotic gear for free without having to pay a single cent. Seems like so much goodness poured into justness, right? Well… Some players by no means celebrated with Bungie.
The official Destiny Twitter account vowed an “arsenal of exotic and legendary gear” while players were under preparing for the next saga. Suddenly, the replies came pouring in with their frustrations, confusion, and downright anger. So, it seems it did not really go according to how they wished it would.
Claims from the very start of the free access included episodes not actually functioning, firstly from @Valiant_Nomad: “Your blog specifically said the episodes will be free too. So what is this?” with a screenshot attached of locked content. Others began to respond along the same line as @Zackbeva27: “Except the episodes isn’t working like yall said. Embarrassing.”
And then there was the confusion about prerequisites. @jacpatbobat had asked if they were expected to finish The Final Shape campaign before starting the episodes whilst @Zackbeva27 responded, “I kinda think you might have to.” @viceissad jumped in with “no u can do the missions and everything will show up on the side of your screen.” So… who’s right? It looks like no one actually knows.
Some players decided that their patience ran out. “@HaifischGrau92 kept the $50 as a tip from me to you,” said one tweet, dripping with sarcasm. Meanwhile, @Baldw20372Brian chimed in with, “If Bungie is involved you won’t get a penny from me.” That certainly hits below the belt.
Then came the technical difficulties. @MhRodi1 bemoaned how due to some error codes, he got locked out of the game for a good 23 days, with the Bungie support thus far providing no helpful responses. “Bungie support 🤡 nuking all tickets and never check,” said he.
That aside, some are still conventionally game for it. This open access window is a great opportunity for newcomers to sample these expansions without having to spend a dime. With so many bugs and unclear requirements though, skeptics do have a reason to raise an eyebrow.
Yep. Bungie with live service games have always been an almost equal measure of hype and headaches. But this time, it seems like the headaches are winning. Maybe they fix this before July 8, or perhaps players just will have to suck it up for yet one more rocky launch. Destiny cracks, regardless.
So, if you say you’re diving, keep track of those updates-‘cuz it ain’t calming down yet. Feather, free loot is free loot. Just don’t expect it to be easy. Or… easy at all. More like swimming through error codes and locked content. Good luck, Guardians.
