CD Projekt is the parent company of CD Projekt Red, the developer behind The Witcher series of games. Andrzej Sapkowski is the author of the book series on which the games are best. To say that the author has had a rocky relationship with the video game developer could be a bit of an understatement.

In fact, in October 2018, he made a legal demand for more money from CD Projekt, arguing that the lump sum payment he had originally received back in 2007 was inadequate in light of the game series’ unexpected success. CD Projekt, in the interest of a fair outcome and an ongoing working relationship, worked with Sapkowski to reach a settlement just this very month.

Apparently CD Projekt accomplished their goal of maintaining a good standing with the author as a new agreement was just signed, making it a very good possibility that new Witcher games are on the way.

Sapkowski isn’t a fan of the video game series, something he hasn’t been subtle about. With the apparent animosity between the two parties, one could only wonder how long the existing agreement could pan out. While CD Projekt Red recently released spin-off games based on the franchise, it looked like 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might have been the last title in the main series.

Fortunately, that all seems behind us now, as the new agreement has “further (solidified) the relationship” between the studio and the author. Not only are they back on good terms, but in a statement on their website, CD Projekt specifically mentions “a framework for the future cooperation between the two sides” and points out that the studio has been granted new rights and that the agreement confirms their title to video games, graphic novels, board games, and merchandise based on The Witcher property.

So what could be coming down the pipe? That’s up for debate. With The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red set out to wrap up the story of Geralt of Rivia, but they’ve expressed interest in exploring more of that world. Any fan of the franchise would agree that it’s a rich, interesting world that could yield any number of stories.

There’s also the possibility of a re-release of the first two Witcher titles, remastered for modern consoles and PCs. And of course, CD Projekt Red could decide that they’re not done with Geralt after all and bring everyone’s favorite monster hunter back for another go around.
