Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red, the developers behind the beloved and critically acclaimed Witcher video game series, announced that much to everyone’s chagrin, their newest IP — Cyberpunk 2077 — has been delayed by a few months.
Originally, Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in the spring, but CDPR felt like the game wouldn’t be ready in time for their original release date, so they moved its launch to September 17. Shortly after the announcement, the devs said that the reason for the delay was to give them more time to playtest, fine-tune, and fix bugs within Night City. It’s also worth noting that the game is playable from start to finish, but it’s not as polished as the devs want it to be.
While responding to the disappointment surrounding Cyberpunk 2077’s delay, one of CD Projekt Red’s developers promised fans that the wait will be worth it in the end.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be released just a few months before Sony and Microsoft release their next-generation consoles — the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X — which has people thinking that there might be a next-gen port for CD Projekt Red’s newest IP.
Following the delay announcement, CD Projekt Red held a conference call where they discussed Cyberpunk 2077 possibly coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, saying that while they’re looking at a next-gen release, their priority right now is the current-generation.
“Cyberpunk is right now heading for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Nothing has changed in regards to the plans. We’re of course looking at the next generation all the time. We’re privy to a lot of information on what’s going on with these platforms, but frankly speaking, we have nothing to share now related to that.”
The Polish video game developer also commented on Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mode, which sadly won’t be released until 2022. Right now, it’s unclear what the online-based mode will include, or if it’ll be a standalone application. It’s been rumored that the PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible, so it might just be added to the PS4 port two years from now.
Those who bought CD Projekt Red’s last game — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — and played it on launch day will remember that it had more than a few bugs, which the devs immediately addressed via a patch. So, they’re trying to ensure that Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have the same buggy launch as their 2015 release.
