Creative Assembly’s next Total War game is the first to be set in the era of Bronze Age Mediterranean conflict between the Trojans and the Greeks. A Total War Sage: TROY looks to explore the reality beneath the many myths surrounding this period of history.

The opening lines of the trailer are from Homer’s Iliad, the epic story which made the conflict into a legend that has stood the test of time, although the trailer is devoid of Brad Pitt.

With music reminiscent of Rome: Total War, the trailer takes fans back to an almost-familiar setting, especially those who ever played the Alexander DLC for the original award-winning Total War title.

The trailer also seems to focus on the epic conflict between Hector and Achilles and it’s likely they’ll be legendary units and heroes in the game, much like the newer Warhammer titles. Whether or not there are going to be fantasy elements to play on the success of CA’s popular Warhammer games is yet to be seen.

A look at the campaign map looks a lot like a merge between Warhammer and Rome 2, which can only be a good thing. It’s bright in color and brings the world of Bronze Age Greece into a bright contrast designed to replicate its legendary setting.

Mount Olympus is in the game, shown in the trailer with bolts of lightning crashing down. How the gods will have an impact on the game isn’t clear, but some sort of campaign missions or hero units might be in the works.

While fans are excited by the prospect of there being mythical creatures in the game, more are willing to accept it’ll be like Creative Assembly’s recent Three Kingdoms, which blurred the lines of myth and reality without providing the insanity of the Warhammer games. Even so, imagine a Water Cyclops in a battle, or a god causing havoc on the battlefield.

Whatever the case, heroes look to be extremely important in this game, as they should, of course. The legend of Homer’s Iliad was based on the strength of the character and the epic duels that took place. If anyone can be trusted to highlight the important parts of the story and acknowledge every detail, it’s Creative Assembly.
